Cheltenham Beach was a lakefront resort on the far South Side in the late 1800s, drawing crowds to its bathhouses and pier between 79th and 83rd Streets. Illinois Steel bought the land in 1898, and the beach that once hosted picnicking Chicagoans became the footprint of South Works.
