Eugene Debs led the American Railway Union into a boycott of Pullman cars in 1894, pulling 125,000 workers off the job across 29 railroads.

He served six months for contempt of court — and came out of jail a committed socialist, carrying the Pullman Strike’s lessons into a career that would run for president five times.
