George Pullman built the luxury sleeping car that made overnight rail travel bearable — then built an entire company town around it. When he cut wages 25% in 1894 without cutting rents, his own workers walked out.
The strike shut down rail traffic nationwide. He died in 1897, still convinced he’d built a model city.
