Oscar De Priest — Congressman

Oscar De Priest broke barrier after barrier — Chicago’s first Black alderman in 1915, then in 1928 the first Black congressman elected north of the Mason-Dixon line in the 20th century.

He represented Chicago’s South Side in Washington until 1935, at a time when that seat had never before belonged to a Black American.
