Robert S. Abbott — Chicago Defender

Robert S. Abbott founded the Chicago Defender in 1905 with a 25-cent investment and a mission: tell Black America the truth. By the early 1920s circulation topped 200,000.

The paper’s calls to head north helped fuel the Great Migration. Abbott became one of the first Black self-made millionaires in the country, built entirely on the power of the press.
