In 1886, a showman named Cap Streeter ran his boat aground on a sandbar off the Near North Side and declared it an independent "District of Lake Michigan," free of city taxes and rules. Decades of land-grab lawsuits followed — and today his sandbar is Streeterville, one of Chicago's priciest addresses.
