The Sunset Cafe at 315 E. 35th Street was one of the first Chicago clubs to seat Black and white patrons side by side, earning it "Black and Tan" status on the segregated South Side. Louis Armstrong blew his horn here nightly through the late 1920s, backed by Carroll Dickerson's band, helping turn a Bronzeville dance hall into ground zero for the sound of hot jazz.
