Vivian Harsh became Chicago’s first Black branch librarian in 1924, and in 1932 opened the George Cleveland Hall Branch in Bronzeville with a mission all her own: a Special Negro Collection preserving Black history and letters.

Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Gwendolyn Brooks all passed through her reading rooms.
