Founded in 1884 by General Philip Sheridan's jockey club, Washington Park Race Track in Woodlawn hosted the American Derby, once one of the richest and most prestigious horse races in the country. The track closed in 1905, its grandstands long gone from a neighborhood that has otherwise forgotten it was ever there.
