Bessie Coleman couldn’t get a pilot’s license in the United States, so she learned French and earned hers in France instead, becoming the first Black woman to hold a pilot’s license on June 15, 1921.
Chicago Defender publisher Robert Abbott helped fund her training. She died in 1926 during a rehearsal flight, but her example opened the sky to everyone who came after.
