Erskine Tate led the Vendome Orchestra at 31st and State Street from 1919 to 1928, scoring silent films with a symphonic band that gradually caught jazz fever. In 1925 he added a young cornet player named Louis Armstrong, and the Vendome pit became one of the launch pads for Chicago's hot jazz era.
