Fort Dearborn rose on the banks of the Chicago River in 1803, named for Secretary of War Henry Dearborn. It fell in the Battle of Fort Dearborn on August 15, 1812.
Rebuilt on the same ground in 1816, it marked the humble, hard-won beginning of a city that would eventually forget it was ever a frontier outpost at all.
