Louis Sullivan — Father of the Skyscraper

“Form ever follows function” — Louis Sullivan coined the phrase that defined modern architecture, then spent 14 years proving it alongside partner Dankmar Adler.

Their Auditorium Building, completed in 1889, remains one of Chicago’s masterworks. He also mentored a young draftsman named Frank Lloyd Wright, extending his influence well past his own lifetime.
