Lovie Austin arrived in Chicago in 1923 and became the house pianist and arranger for Paramount Records, leading her own group, the Blues Serenaders, through dozens of sessions. She backed some of the biggest names in classic blues, including Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, and Alberta Hunter, from a piano bench that shaped the sound of the genre.
