Starting in 1892, the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company built more than fifty ornate corner taverns across Chicago, each required to sell Schlitz beer exclusively under the "tied house" system. Several of these brick and terra-cotta taverns still stand as protected city landmarks, quiet monuments to a beer-soaked chapter of Chicago's commercial history.
